Abstract: Cardiac arrhythmia is one of the most common causes of death worldwide. Most antiarrhythmic drugs lack specificity and are associated with numerous adverse effects.More importantly, nearly all antiarrhythmic drugs possess potential arrhythmogenic properties, which may exacerbate existing arrhythmias or induce new ones. The glutamatergic and GABAergic systems,as novel endogenous regulatory mechanisms, confer distinct functional plasticity in cardiomyocytes.Elucidating the diverse biological roles of the glutamatergic and GABAergic systems in cardiac tissues,as well as identifying the conditions that lead to their dysregulation,is critical for the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting this rhythm-regulating system in the heart.

Key words: cardiac arrhythmias, glutamatergic system, GABAergic system
